Conjunction “So” – Meaning, Uses, Examples and Exercises

Meaning of Conjunction
A conjunction is a word used to join words, phrases, or sentences.

Common Conjunctions

and – adds information
but – shows contrast
or – shows a choice
because – gives a reason
so – shows a result
if – shows a condition
although – shows contrast

Examples
  1. Asha and Juma are pupils.
  2. I wanted to go, but it was raining.
  3. Do you want tea or coffee?
  4. She stayed at home because she was sick.
  5. It was raining, so we stayed at home.
  6. If you study hard, you will pass the examination.

Focus: Conjunction “So”
“So” is used to connect an action or situation with its result.
Structure:
Cause + so + Result

Example:
The boy was hungry, so he ate some food.
Cause: The boy was hungry.
Result: He ate some food.

In a sentence using “so”:
Cause + so + Result

Example 1
It was raining, so we stayed at home.
Cause: It was raining.
Result: We stayed at home.

Example 2
John was hungry, so he ate food.
Cause: John was hungry.
Result: He ate food.

Example 3
She studied hard, so she passed the examination.
Cause: She studied hard.
Result: She passed the examination.
Easy way to remember
👉 Cause = Why did it happen?
👉 Result = What happened because of it?
So, “so” introduces the result.
